Luminous Sculptures
These objects are modern lighting solutions with a very contemporary feel and a strong emphasis on beautiful form. They bring together elements from twentieth-century design practice and from ancient sculpture and craft traditions, enabling them to harmonise with all environments — they add beauty and functionality to both home and office spaces. They are made from clean polypropylene and use only low-voltage energy-saver bulbs.
Most of the lights in the range are self-contained luminous pieces that sit on a desk or table. Some are designed to work as diffusers for ceiling lights. They give off a lovely, warm, buttery light without harsh shadows or highlights. It is warm, rich and soft, with a surprising effect of filling the entire room while remaining quite gentle. These features of beautiful and organic form, plus soft yet complete illumination make these products unusual in the field of modern lighting solutions. They have a high level of innovation, technical accomplishment, and aesthetic appeal.
Naturally Made by Hands
All the objects in the range are hand-made in Sydney. This ensures their individual character and great attention is given to quality and reliability. Future work will explore the possibilities of using recycled plastic to create forms, as well as a variety of hand-crafted printed art papers. New designs are always being developed, all with a fluid and organic feel. Most of the works owe their design to natural forms, especially seed-pods and other egg-type forms that are involved in bringing new life into being. The ingenious, beautiful, and productive inventions of nature are an eternal supply of wonder and creation to us.
The process is essentially a form of origami, which uses square sheets. The sheet is folded and moulded into organic forms that can display the flow of light through their interlocking curves. The main types in the range are the Venusia, Spindle, and Yufo designs. We are also making lights with a range of printed papers, including prints by the famous Australian designer Florence Broadhurst.
The Right Bulbs
The materials used make it essential that only low-voltage energy-saver bulbs are used. These can be found almost everywhere today, from supermarkets to hardware stores and large retail chains. We recommend a large shop like Kmart as they have a wide variety and this guarantees you will be able to get the right bulb. Be careful to buy energy-saver bulbs that clearly say “warm white” on their packaging — the cold, bluish light made by some of the newer type bulbs is not as pleasant.
